8-23-06 - A new school year began at Ardmore High School with a new face leading the way. Bobby Upshaw was recently named the high school principal, and as an African American, he made history before he settled into his new office.
Bobby Upshaw spent years as a school administrator in the Oklahoma City area. He hadn't heard much about Ardmore when he was offered the job.
Nevertheless, the excitement and the challenge it offered him was more than enough to bring him to the area.
For the first time in the school's history, an African American is leading Ardmore’s students.
And, at a school where two incidents last year were race related, Upshaw says he's already working to bring together the student body, as well as create an atmosphere of unity instead of tension.
Upshaw spent time as a teacher and administrator in Oklahoma City before coming to Ardmore. Administrators in Ardmore are impressed with his ability to lead with enthusiasm.
Before taking the job in Ardmore, Upshaw worked as an administrator at Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City.
