8-23-06 - The city of Hugo is suing the Choctaw County Ambulance Authority over questionable bidding practices. KXII first brought you the story on Tuesday night when the city lost their ambulance contract to Southwest EMS, a private contractor out of Arkansas.
In a special town hall meeting Wednesday night, the council went into executive session for an hour and a half. In the end, they passed a motion for the city attorney to file civil litigation against the ambulance authority.
The contract between the city and the ambulance authority expires at the end of August. City leaders say without it, their 25-man fire department will likely suffer layoffs.
Mayor Stan Payne told First News that after an exhausting grass fire year and higher fuel costs, the city was losing money and had no choice but to raise the bid. After an investigation conducted by the city attorney, city leaders decided to move forward with the lawsuit.
The Arkansas company will bring their own supplies and manpower to run the service.
