Men's Shelter Destroyed in Fire

08-24-06 - The Red Cross is working to help 13 people who are homeless after a fire at a men's shelter Wednesday night in Denison. The Denison Fire Marshall says the fire broke out in a storage room at the Surrender House at 516 West Morgan Street about 10:20 PM.

Thirteen men and the house manager were inside at the time, but they made it out okay. However, two residents were treated for smoke inhalation and one was treated for a fractured ankle.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials say the house is not livable. Most of the interior was damaged by smoke and water.

The Texoma Area Red Cross is working to help the displaced residents. They are accepting cash donations to provide food and medical expenses for the residents. Clothing donations are also being accepted at the Lakeway Resale barn in Pottsboro

The Surrender House is a non-profit shelter for men recovering from substance abuse.
