HUNTSVILLE, TX ― A Grayson County man sentenced to die for killing his wife, her daughter and their son, gouged out his other eye in prison last month.

According to the warden at the state prison in Huntsville, death row inmate Andre Thomas gouged out his left eye in early December and then ate it.

Five days after the murders in March 2004, Thomas gouged out his right eye inside a Grayson County jail cell after reading a Bible verse.

The state's top Criminal Appeals Court upheld Thomas' conviction and death sentence back in October of 2008.

Thomas is now in a psychiatric prison facility in Richmond, Texas.

No execution date has been set.

Lisa in Sherman, obviously you do not know the Hughes family as well as you thought, you did not know that Leyah's father also had 3 other children, 2 daughters & a son prior to her birth. Point blank these people would still be alive to this day & if the "Husbands" in this case would have been at home taking care of their own family, instead of disrupting another man's family!!! And for the record, the surviving Hughes children they were little only 6, 3 & 2, it could have been them as well, think!!! It's just not about ANDRE!!! WHAT ABOUT THE SUFFERING SURVIVING CHILDREN???? MAY GOD EASE THEIR PAIN!!!!

Okay people, the mentally ill still have rights and one of those rights is whether they choose to take their medication or not. If they choose to discontinue their meds, become psychotic because of their choice, and kill someone or several people while they are psychotic, they still need to be reponsible for their actions. Many people with mental illness choose to stop taking their medication for various reasons. The state mainstreams mentally ill patients when they are stablized on the meds. The result of the state mainstreaming the mentally ill and them having the right to stop their meds is city, country, and state jails are homes for many who are mentally ill.

I really wish people would do a little research or get the facts right before they go mouthing off. Andre has tried to kill himself on 3 separate occassions. The state saved him....so they can spend the time, money and effort to kill him themselves. Also FYI, it is much more $$$$ to kill someone than keep them alive for the rest of their lives....go look it up if you don't believe me. BTW, Andre has also tried to waive all of his appeals so he can die. Now is the problem with Andre or our system??!!! If you feel so strongly about this then DO SOMETHING about it--write your state representative, write something worthwhile and worth reading.

OOTO, you silly goose, a death roll is what alligators do! If this crazy dude will eat his own eyeballs, he'd probably eat my ex-wife's cooking too. Then again, that's what he deserves. He should have to eat an entire meal that she prepared! (Then hang him)

HE WAS A BLESSED MAN WITH A GOOD WIFE AND CHILDREN WHY WOULD HE WANT TO WASTE SUCH A BLESSING.I GUESS HE MAY HAVE A SENSE OF REMORSE OR MAYBE NOT HOWEVER,IT IS A LITTLE LATE NOW HE NEEDS TO ACCEPT HIS FATE FOR HIS ACTIONS HE IS NOT DESERVING OF ANY SYMPOTHY FOR EATING HIS EYE.

what about the victims appeal...oh thats right they don't get one..he played judge and jury that day. this man deserves to die for his crimes. he was found sane to stand trial and found guilty move on. all of you people who are saying he shouldn't be excecuted head on down to the jail and tell them he can stay at your house...bet you ll sleep real good. add him to ur health insurance vision care shoud be real cheap

Marie; Is a "death roll" a piece of bread that one eats that kills them, or is it something that happens in final moments of life, as in "While John was in his death throes, he did a death roll?"

Most all of these comments are about Andre. Who cares about him? God will surely be the only judge that matters. I am close tot he Hughes family and this family hasn't been the same since this horrible man took matters into his own hands and killed their precious Leyah. She was her father's only child and he is still sick to this day. When you loose someone it changes your life forever and these are the people we need to be really concerned with NOT ANDRE!!! Imagine hearing this story on the news and you are the Hughes family or Laura's family. Give this a rest for their sake and get rid of this SICKO! Crazy or not give the families peace so that they don't have to hear about this man ever again.

Growing up with this man I can say he was failed by all systems that could of helped him. I do feel as tho the death penalty is appropriate for him but beleive the lifes of the people killed could have been saved had his docs not blown off the obvious. He has been on the crazy side for years and for the courts to continue to bring up the cold medicine he was taking and making it sound as if this caused him to kill in the first place is ludicris. Last time I saw his bro Brian he was talking about how his mother was trying to kill him and he better get him Mom before she gets him. I reported this but no one has helped yet. The only thing saving their Mom right now is the fact Brian is in jail also. I feel sorry for the family but not Andre. This is a very hard thing to deal with.

I think if everyone got to see the facts they would all agree to let him die. You can ask the people who were involved in working on this case and they will tell you that. Why should we pay to keep him alive many more years when he was sentenced to death. He was found fit to stand trial. He knew he screwed up because he turned himself in! He knew what he did was wrong, he is not mentally ill nor has he ever been. He might have been weird or whatever but that does not make him mentally ill. What he did to the family and what he was planning on doing makes it even more horrible. Bottom line he knew what he was doing. If you had the file on what he did, you would think differently. If you could see what he did, you would think differently. If you KNEW the FACTS you would think differently.

My thoughts exactly. Well said. (quote) Posted by: shermanite Location: sherman on Jan 10, 2009 at 12:14 AM You all need to remember that this guy is not truly mentally ill, not in the clinical sense of the word. He created his own mental illness by frying his brain cells by abusing drugs so he could enjoy his recreational highs. I have no sympathy for him. I don't know how his attorneys can sleep at night trying to get him off of these charges. They should be ashamed. Andre Thomas needs to pay the price for his actions. Those poor babies, killed in the most horrible way imaginable. There is a HUGE difference in people who suffer from mental illness and druggies who fry their brains. Whatever this guy gets is too good for him. He can pluck his eyes out, but it won't erase the images of what he did, those horrible scenes will play over and over in his head until the day he dies, which won't come soon enough

Posted by: j Location: sherman on Jan 10, 2009 at 03:21 PM
Hey WTF??? Speaking of blatant ignorance-the system did not fail Andre. Everyone is looking for someone else to blame for their actions and decisions and it comes down to him making his choices. He is responsible for his crime. He is still making bad choices.

My daughter went to school with Andre and Laura. Even in middle school Andre was very odd, hearing voices, chanting strange "poety" all the while being very polite and "personable".He stopped by our home a few times, and to be honest, he made my flesh crawl. While it's been about 13 years ago, I still remember one day when my 14 year old daughter, who was at her best friends house a block away, called me and asked me to come get her and her friend, and act like I was angry at them....and she'd explain later. When I got to the friends house, Andre was there...(the friends parents weren't home) and while his demeanor was seemingly calm and pleasant,he was talking about the voices in his head, etc, and the girls were afraid to just tell him to leave. The school system and social workers knew Andre was mentally ill and a danger to society long before he slaughtered Laura and the babies. Andre was out of his mind long before he got into drugs.

Most of you people need to go back to not caring. Seriously, "I care for the deceased, the people he killed". No you don't. Quit pretending. I'm very sure Andre Thomas didn't do this act to get your attention either. Andre Thomas is dead, he died as soon as he killed the first victim, probably even before that. And people, quit worrying about what your tax dollars are doing. The state is being civilized about this instead of running a lynch mob.

Nobody is disregarding your feelings whatsoever. If anything, anyone who cares or who has been there has nothing but sympathy for you. I just wish people could understand the difference between getting justice and wishing cruelty. I've indulged in many moments of quiet retribution. But I realize that these thoughts only damage my peace of mind and soul, and the same for everyone around me. I've had a lot of time to think and I'm beginning to understand a deeper meaning in a spiritual way. Anger hurts the soul, and forgiveness (somehow in time, some way) heals the soul. It is the healing power for yourself and not the one who hurt you. But DO NOT worry, those whose cavernous souls care not for the damage they have inflicted on others have not gotten away with ANYTHING. They just think they have for now. Keep your sites on loving your loved ones and on God. That's the best advice I could ever give anyone. And I swore I'd log off. I guess I wasn't finished with this thread.

For the record, I am NOT okay with what this man did. God only knows I understand because I lost my son. Not a day goes by that I don't hurt. What I AM trying to say is that there is a difference between JUSTICE and CRUELTY. What he did is absolutely unfathomable. But the twisted comments are seriously offensive and I would think, beneath you. Don't lower yourself to a standard that (I hope) is what you despise. It's one thing to be angry, but it's another to spread toxic words like that because even though it's just words, you still affect how others feel. Everything in this world counts, including what we say to others. I would LIKE to think that this world is not desensitized to violence. Toni said it pretty well I think: He is a "horribly tormented soul." Look at him and the entire picture. It's sad. As a consequence, the survivors on BOTH sides live in torment every day. They will have to live with it after he dies. This is truly pitiful. My heart feels so heavy. Logging off.

God bless America if that's your idea of not being sick to suggest my family being killed by a man ... you make the "bleeding heart liberals" points for them better than they do themselves.

Posted by: Dana on Jan 9, 2009 at 04:24 PM
I find it interesting that people assume I and others who voice less bloodthirsty opinions never experienced this from another perspective without asking. In reality a very close relative of mine was murdered at the hands of someone who I believe was mentally deranged - although it is doubtful he would have passed the standards for that in the US and would no doubt be on death row right now and not free after serving his time. I am neither a bleeding heart liberal nor someone ignorant of the loss of someone to murder. I just choose to honor the life of my beloved one by honoring all life, not by supporting the extinction of it. If that makes me somehow a whacko to those who think its somehow funny or positive that a mentally ill man mutilates himself, then I thank God to be a whacko. Neither my deceased family member nor her children support(ed) the kind of vengeance demonstrated in the US - though thats absolutely your right to express it - I dont remember saying otherwise

To all the people saying we should not talk like about this guy- He is trash that killed a baby by cutting out it's heart and it family. How in the world can you tell me we should not kill him. To me that make you a sicko and we should let him come over to your house and cut your familys heart out and see what you think then only one man can make this right. Kill hem and send him to that man.

This is so weird. I really used to be friends with this kid. I talked around the neighborhood when he first got incarcerated and while he was touting God told him to do it, he was on major drugs. Sad that I know this person but at least I know he was a better person before drugs. Plus, he probably just wants to die already. Man, living with all that guilt, its almost cruelty to let him live.

Posted by: Bella Location: Houston on Jan 9, 2009 at 03:25 PM
To that feel bad for him. Please keep in mind his crimes. Why his live be spared when he didn't think of sparing his family when he killed them did he? If it was your sister or someone in your family would you still pitty him? I would hope not. I believe go ahead and put him out of his misery even if it does cost tax payers more cause of all the appeals he would get but hey it would be money well spent.

Posted by: Judge on Jan 9, 2009 at 03:11 PM
Another source I read says that he also attempted to take his own life recently. So lets get this straight. He is on DEATH row. He wants to die. But we are spending 32k a year to keep him alive? Not to mention the trial costs, medical emergency bills, etc. Love to see those tax dollars at work.

Posted by: ME on Jan 9, 2009 at 03:09 PM
Honestly, who cares about this trash further damaging himself. We continously bring him back up and I'm sure the families of the victimes dont enjoy seeing his name and face in the news. For all of you saying he's insane, he is obviously not right in the head. Some points in the trial were he started running faster from through the park when he heard sirens. If he was truly insane, he would think he did nothing wrong. The quicker he fries, the better we all will be.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 9, 2009 at 03:07 PM
Lovely, this has made national news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090109/ap_on_re_us/death_row_eye This guy is PSYCHO! People keep crying about how he should've gotten help when he needed it... honestly, what good would it have done?

Posted by: WE THE PEOPLE Location: WELL HELLO on Jan 9, 2009 at 02:49 PM
Zyklon, we the "other" people also have the right to state OUR opinion that some of you folks sound just as sick as this man is. Why don't you tell me how being violent fixes what has happened. I feel very sorry for the TRUE victims who have been left behind. Nobody was saying that what this guy did was ""OKAY"". It's just kind of interesting reading all this double talk. *Oh a killer who mutilates himself and others--WHY HERE'S THE ANSWER, JETHRO! LET'S JAM AN ICEPICK INTO HIS HEAD!* But I suppose seeing the hypocrisy in statements like that would be lost on you anyway. This so-called bleeding heart here lost her son to murder with NO justice. I suppose you think I'd be a better citizen if I ran my mouth and talked about insane things like the guy should have an icepick shoved into his cranium or maybe he should make some soup out of his body parts? No thanks. I've got a better conscience than that. My family separated from the apes long ago. Enjoy your miserable self.

RACHAEL, THINK OF HIS VICTIMS. JUST BABIES, DEFENSELESS LITTLE BABIES. NOW WHAT IF IT WAS YOUR BABIES. SEE ANY DIFFERENCE?

Lots of people you are another bleeding heart liberal this nation could do without. This lunatic slaughtered innocent people and now continues to be a pain to society by eating himself. He is obviously messed up, and WE THE PEOPLE have a right to comment on it whether you like our point of view or not. This fool needs to be dealt with harshly, not because of his eyes but because of his victims. At least now he can't see to harm anybody else.

Isn't it interesting that Andrea Yates was found "insane", but this guy wasn't? What is wrong with our judicial system? He needs to me locked up in a maximum security mental hospital. This guy has reached the point of no return and he is extremely dangerous to the prison workers or hospital workers!!!

There is no way I would show this evil devil any kind of remorse. Quit with the sob stories. You might feel different if it were your daughter and grandchildren that got their hearts cut from them. LET HIM DIE!!!!! He is using this "insane" thing as a manipulation.

Posted by: Dana on Jan 9, 2009 at 12:41 PM
"he believes that this man should be "put out of his misery" i agree but i wouldnt word it that way". So by not "putting it that way" what you say is somehow less twisted and the "humane" thing to do?? Maybe "putting people out of their misery" is how you solve problems in your country - thankfully we are less lazy than that in mine. We try to educate ourselves so we can work to prevent murder rather than wait til it happens and then pat ourselves on the back for killing the mentally disturbed. What a country of sickos

Posted by: anonymous Location: tx on Jan 9, 2009 at 11:56 AM
my fiance witnessed this lovely happening and it has really messed with his head.he came home from working the night shift just to tell me this story then all he could do is hold me and our daughter close like we had been gone for years.i think he believes that this man should be "put out of his misery" i agree but i wouldnt word it that way, part of me feels sad, i mean what could possibly be going on in this man's mind? Either way he's a bad, sick sick man. I agree that if you know how far an ice pick should be pushed to go through the brain then yes, you are just as sick as him.

Posted by: here Location: still here on Jan 9, 2009 at 11:39 AM
He was a fellow classmate of mine and he really just needs to get some help. Some of his family members repectively do have some mental issues as well and he did have problems growing up. I believe he is one of those young people that just fell through the cracks before he commited this insane murder. (Im not justifying his actions im just sayin)

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 9, 2009 at 11:10 AM
just kill him already

Posted by: WTF??? Location: Sherman on Jan 9, 2009 at 11:04 AM
I can't even say I am surprised at the comments posted here nor by the blatant ignorance and intolerance shown. Why doesn't everyone realize how many victims this case really had? I doubt this story gives comfort to anyone involved. This entire case shows the total breakdown of every system our society has in place to help its citizens - from CPS, to MHMR, to law enforcement, and of course - to the justice system - how sad that not one of those organizations stepped up decades ago and did what they were supposed to do and helped this poor soul. Which could have indirectly saved the lives of the innocents. Also how shameful that as a society we would rather "put him out of his misery" than even think about the role played in this case by society itself as whole. I wonder how many more Andre Thomas's in the making are out there, being ignored like he was, not getting the help they need. But nobody cares until it is too late... too late for not just him.

I agree. Besides the attention ho comedians posting here, I think there are some genuine psychopaths who write these responses. Anyone who thinks someone should put a rusty ice pick in their brain is just as psychopathic as the guy who killed his family. The only thing separating these folks from the convicts is some steel bars. But who knows? With that kind of mentality it might just be a matter of time. Know what I mean? *nuk nuk nuk*

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 9, 2009 at 10:11 AM
He thinks they will spare his life if he is insane. That is why he gashed his eyes out and ate them. He is still only thinking of himself.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 9, 2009 at 09:47 AM
Joe, this "mentally ill" person is a proven danger to himself and others. It would be kinder to put him out of his misery before he starts injuring himself even more. Who knows, perhaps he'll start biting off his own fingers and eating them next.

Posted by: Freedom Lovin' on Jan 9, 2009 at 09:34 AM
Hey lots of people, everyone is free to say what they like in this country. If you, or others, don't like the comments being posted here, you're free to not read them. You're just like the rest of the sheep in this country. You think that because YOU don't like something, that NO ONE should be free to partake. Stop trying to restrict liberty, start defending it instead.

KXII: I don't care if you print this or not, cause that's not the point. Do yall not realize or do you just not care, letting this "post your comments" go on, of how many people you are hurting? Even tho I sometimes agree with the rude comments, but these people still have family that are being hurt by the things that are said. This is encouraging gossip and false asscouations of people. I think that is a sin.

Posted by: Rachael Location: UK on Jan 9, 2009 at 06:41 AM
It never fails to amaze me how people will find some sick pleasure in hearing news like this, and then turn around and try to claim the inmate is the twisted one! Perhaps those who see this as something to rejoice in should look a little closer to home to find the truly depraved.

Someone needs to hurry up and execute this bozo before he costs the taxpayers more money in medical bills. Jeez give the idiot a rusty ice pick and help him use it, it appears he's not going deep enough. You will know its in far enough when the end of the handle is flush with the eye socket!

Posted by: Sean on Jan 9, 2009 at 05:40 AM
Like cutting out 1 eye is not obvious enough???Another eye ,plus he ate it.If this is not insane i don't know what is?!!!!

Posted by: citizen Location: sherman on Jan 8, 2009 at 11:38 PM
He probably thought getting rid of his eyes would keep him from seeing what horrible things he did to his victims. Guess he's since learned that try as he might, his mind's eye will make him see it over - and over - and over again. His own personal hell. He'll have to live with that personal hell until time to visit the real hell that he has coming to him...
