Murder, Kidnapping under Investigation

9-9-06 – The Coal County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide and kidnapping. According to Sheriff Roy Deck, a woman called the Sheriff’s Office around 10:50 Friday night. She told authorities that she witnessed a friend shoot another friend in a hunting cabin near the small community of Olney.

The woman said the shooter then kidnapped her and her infant. She said the man forced her and the baby into her vehicle. She escaped after hitting the man with a tire iron and running into a wooded area near Lehigh – where she called the Sheriff’s Office from a home.

Deputies found the body of a 33-year-old man from Olney in the cabin. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say a sawed-off shotgun was used in the shooting.

Authorities spent Friday night looking for the suspected shooter – a 27-year-old man from Bromide. Deputies set up a perimeter and sent other law enforcement agencies a description of the suspect. At around 4 a.m. on Saturday, authorities received a call – reporting a gunshot near a home in a remote area west of Coalgate. The Sheriff says the suspect apparently shot himself in a vehicle.

Both bodies have been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Oklahoma City for positive identification. The Sheriff says the kidnapping victim and her child were not harmed.

No motive has been established, authorities are still investigating.
