9-16-06 - Several Texas cities, including Sherman, could face legal challenges over recent laws and ordinances that restrict the movement of registered sex offenders.
The laws keep offenders from living within a thousand feet of schools, parks and churches.
But for the first time, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is being asked to take a look at the ordinances, which limit exactly where registered sex offenders can, and most importantly, cannot live.
State Senator Jane Nelson of Lewisville, who supports the limitations,
has sent a request to Abbot's office asking whether a city can prohibit registered sex offenders from living in certain locations.
The answer could have huge ramifications as more and more cities adopt similar ordinances.
