9-21-06 - Prosecutors next month will try a former nurse in the deaths of 10 patients instead of just two at her San Angelo capital murder trial.

Thursday, a judge granted a motion to amend one capital murder indictment, which charged Vickie Dawn Jackson in two deaths, to add the names of eight other victims.

Jackson was charged in a total of five indictments with killing 10 elderly patients at Nocona General Hospital in 2000 and 2001. Jackson, who says she is innocent, is accused of injecting lethal doses of a drug.

Prosecutor Jack McGaughey said he could have presented the other deaths as extraneous offenses. However, he said that when prosecutors have done that in other cases, some appeals courts haven't ruled favorably.

Jackson faces life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.
