Chickasaws and Choctaws to Help With Wildfires

Firefighters from the Chickasaw Nation are joining forces to help put out wildfires in southern California that have been burning for weeks.

The U.S. Forest Service called for 20 firefighters from the Chickasaw Nation, Ada Bureau of Indian Affairs Superintendent Traile Glory said.

The crew received notice to organize Thursday and left Friday morning for Cedar Creek Falls near Julian, CA. The firefighters’ shift could last up to 14 days.

“We are keeping the Chickasaw firefighters and all who are affected by this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers,” said Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby. “We are proud of our firefighters’ bravery and service to others in times like these.”

Firefighters from Choctaw, Cherokee, Seminole, Pawnee, Kiowa, Apache, Caddo and Comanche tribes were also called to duty Friday.

Firefighters with the Chickasaw Nation have also been called upon this year to help with the space shuttle recovery in Nagadoches, TX and hurricane Isabel disaster relief in Williamsburg, VA.
