10-5-06 - A Grayson County jury found a 75-year-old Sherman woman guilty of criminally negligent homicide on Thursday night. After nearly five hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict in the case against Mary Burrow. The elderly woman could not stand on her own when the judge read the verdict.
Prosecutors say she drove recklessly through a minor accident scene on FM 1417 in December of 2003. But her car hit and killed Freddie Raper, one of the initial accident victims who was standing on the shoulder.
Defense attorney Joey Fritts says Burrow never saw Raper that night. He claims it was simply an accident - not a crime. But prosecutors argued that Burrow behaved recklessly, and had no regard for the accident scene she ran through.
The jury will return on Friday morning for the sentencing phase of the trial. She could face 180 days to 2 years in prison, plus fines. She was placed in jail Thursday night because her bond was discharged on the order of Judge Lauri Blake.
