AUSTIN (AP) - Democrat Chris Bell is asking independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman to drop out of the race and help him defeat Republican Governor Rick Perry.
But Friedman was quoted in The Dallas Morning News as saying he wouldn't leave the race. A spokeswoman for Bell says Bell yesterday left a message with Friedman asking for a meeting at Friedman's ranch near Kerrville to discuss the race.
But Friedman's spokeswoman says the independent candidate would
not be meeting with Bell and he would not be dropping out of the race.
The campaign calls Bell's request a, quote, "desperate attempt to salvage their campaign."
Bell says that his and Friedman's supporters have a lot in common and both want change. Independent candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn and Libertarian James Werner are also on the November 7th ballot.
