WINDOM, TX -- A Tennessee man is making his way across the country--at about three miles an hour. Our own Tom Johnson tracked him down to find out why he's hitting the road in a mule-drawn cart.
Grazing mules are a familiar sight across the countryside, but it's not every day that you see them driving down the highway.
One month into a cross-country journey, John McComsey is living that dream.
"I planned this thing around my retirement and on March 1st I quit everything," McComsey said. "Everyone said 'John, you can't quit' and I just quit. April 1st I just left."
Jack is one of two mules John purchased to travel from Henry, Tennessee to Phoenix, Arizona. So far the trip has taken them over 600 miles, and the weather is not slowing them down.
"I was down in Hooks when my sister called and said 'You'd better get shelter', but this wagon is all I got," McComsey said.
While he pioneers across America, John is spreading awareness for Multiple Sclerosis, after a niece was diagnosed with the disease, three years ago, John knew he could use the trip to raise money for her treatment. And driving along busy highways, John faces danger of his own.
"I just get on the highway and pray for the best," McComsey said. "There was one, no excuse for it, all the driver's fault. He went by so close I could reach out and touch the trailer."
His mules only drive about three miles per hour, making 20 miles each day--when the weather is good. He hopes to make Sherman by Thursday night, and then it's off to Phoenix for July 4th.
