10-26-06 - A staple of downtown Ardmore for decades is moving across town. Harvey Douglass Funeral Home has stood on 1st Street since 1920. But owners are leaving the hustle and bustle of downtown for South Commerce.
The walls are still sound but are no longer large enough to accommodate the growing family business. So today, owners joined with architects and members of the chamber of commerce to break ground on the new 11,500 square foot facility. The new building will include four large state rooms, audio-visual technology, a chapel, and room for a crematory.
Although downtown has served them well, South Commerce is better for business because of its proximity to major highways and local cemeteries.
The new Harvey Douglass Centennial Funeral Home will be finished this time next year to coincide with Oklahoma centennial celebrations. The old building will remain downtown. Owners are negotiating with local buyers but won't comment on who that might be.
