Denison Killer to be Executed Thursday

12-2-03 - Ivan Ray Murphy is a name familiar to many Texomans. The Denison man was convicted for the murder of an elderly woman more than 14 years ago. On Thursday, he will pay the ultimate price. Barring a last minute appeal, Murphy will be executed in Huntsville. He’s spent the last 12 years on death row for the murder of Lula Mae Denning. Prosecutors say the 80 year old Denison woman treated Murphy like a grandson and paid him to cut her grass and paint her house. But on the night of January 10th, 1989, Murphy, along with a friend, Doug Stoff, went to her home to rob her for drug money. They beat her to death with her own cane and stole her jewelry. Murphy still claims he is innocent but all his appeals have failed, including yesterday's final application. We talked to one of Lula Mae's sons on the phone. Richard Denning says the family will watch the execution in Huntsville. He says the last 13 years have been hard but he is hoping for closure on Thursday.
