11-06-06 BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - "Long live the people and death to their
enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"
That cry from Saddam Hussein, defiant and arrogant yesterday as
an Iraqi judge sentenced him to hang for the killings of Shiites in
retaliation for an assassination attempt.
Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki (NOO'-ree ahl-MAH'-lih-kee) hails the verdict as a judgment on "a whole dark era that was unmatched in Iraq's history."
Two subordinates have been sentenced to death along with Saddam,
while four others got lesser sentences. One of the eight defendants
The death sentences automatically go to a nine-judge appeals
panel. There's no time limit, but one court official says the
appeals process could take as little as three to four weeks once
the formal paperwork's submitted. If the verdicts and sentences are
upheld, the executions must be carried out within 30 days.
