Horses Left to Die in Fannin Co

11-6-06 - Authorities are trying to find the owner of dozens of starving horses that were abandoned near Honey Grove. The Fannin County Sheriff says more than 35 horses and foals have lacked care for the past six months.

Authorities learned of the animals after calls of loose horses on highway 100 back in October. They called in an equine cruelty investigator Paula Johnson two weeks ago. Johnson works for Lone Star Equine Service. She found several rotting carcasses on the property, but neither Johnson nor deputies could locate the owner of the horses.

A judge granted Johnson a seizure warrant for the animals, which gives her possession of them for the next 10 days. A court date was scheduled for November 16th to determine what happens next.

A north Texas man came forward two weeks ago to care for the animals, but officials say they’ll need more help, and soon. If you’d like to help, call Paula Johnson at (903)271-0939. You can also learn more, or make a donation at
