Health Care Chairman Wins Top Award

Jerdy Gary awarded the DFWHC Distinguished Health Service Award

During ceremonies at the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council’s Annual Award Luncheon, Jerdy Gary, Chairman of Texoma HealthCare System, was awarded the DFWHC’s highest honor, the 2006 Distinguished Health Service Award. The award is given to an individual or individuals who have committed personal and professional time and resources to better the quality healthcare for all citizens.

For over 25 years, Mr. Gary has been actively involved with Texoma Medical Center and THCS. He has served on the THCS Board of Directors, currently serving as Chairman for a second time. He was a founding member of the TMC Foundation, serving 14 years as its chairman. During his time as Foundation Chairman, country music singer & actress Reba McEntire joined Jerdy in his passion and service to the Denison healthcare community. Through her benefit concerts, numerous facilities and services have been established including Reba’s Ranch House, the Reba McEntire Nurseries, the Reba McEntire Rehabilitation Center, and the Reba Mobile Mammography Unit.

Since its opening in 1992, Reba’s Ranch House, a home-away-from-home for families of TMC’s critically ill patients, has accommodated over 20,000 guests representing 7,000 families. The Ranch House is supported financially by donations and fund-raising events under the guidance of TMC’s Foundation and the TMC Development Committee. The Development Committee is composed of dedicated women committed to the Foundation’s mission.

According to TMC President & CEO, W. Mackey Watkins, M.D., “Jerdy has become the quintessential community volunteer over the past few years, serving not only TMC, but Denison, Grayson County and Texas. He wears a lot of hats in our community and works tirelessly on an unbelievable number of projects.”

In addition to his roles at TMC, Jerdy has served a vast number of community organizations and task forces including appointments by 3 Texas governors. Those appointments include being a member of the Task Force on Indigent Health in Texas by former Governor Mark White, membership on the Task Force on Flooding of the Red River by former Governor Ann Richards and chairman of the Grayson County Regional Mobility Alliance by current Governor Rick Perry.

Gary has served as a board member for 6 years on the Denison Development Alliance and chaired the organization from 2004-2006. He has served as the Mayor of Denison, Chairman of the Denison Area Chamber of Commerce and as a senior member of the Austin College Board of Trustees. He also served on two different occasions as Chairman of the Board of Trustees and also Board Chairman of Waples United Methodist Church. He has received many awards for service, among them the 1989 Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation’s “Road Hand Award”. He was the first recipient of the Annual Civic Award from the Denison Rotary Club and was designated Denison Professional & Business Women’s Club “Boss of the Year” in 1977.

Jerdy and his wife of nearly 52 years, Anne are the proud parents of 3 children and four grandchildren. Anne is active on the TMC Development Committee. The couple reside in Denison.

For 30 years the DFWHC has presented the Annual Awards Luncheon attracting 1,500 healthcare executives and employees from across North Texas. The keynote speaker for this year’s event was Retired U.S. General Tommy Franks. Others receiving awards were Howard M. Chase, President & CEO of Methodist Health System, who was awarded the Boone Powell, Sr. Award of Excellence and Brett McClung, President of Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital, who was awarded the Young Healthcare Executive of the Year.
