New Details in Child Shooting

11-21-06 - First News has uncovered new details in the shooting death of a 3-year-old Denison boy last week. An arrest affidavit shows police reports from Wednesday, November 15th – the day that Ashton Scott Matthews was killed by a single gunshot.

Police responded to the home on Lakeview within minutes of the 911 call. The responding officer found 18-year-old Shawn Michael June sitting in the living room, sobbing uncontrollably. His mother had a cordless phone in her hand, which was covered in blood.

First responders were in a bedroom of the home, but were unable to obtain signs of life from Matthews, who had been shot in the head.

Police determined that June's mother had been babysitting Ashton because the little boy's mom was sick. She told police that her son and grandson had gone to a bedroom to play. Moments later she heard the shot, which came from a 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

The 18-year-old June gave police several accounts. At first he claimed that Ashton somehow shot himself. June later admitted he was twirling the gun when it fired. He also told detectives that they were playing cops and robbers.

As for that gun, June told officers his grandfather gave it to him the day before. He currently faces a charge of reckless endangerment or injury to a child.

We spoke to the district attorney on Tuesday. He expects a grand jury will hear the case sometime after the first of the year.

On Monday, Denison police filed the felony charge against June. He'd been arrested and arraigned on Wednesday night for criminally negligent homicide.

June is being held on a $100,000 bond.
