GRAYSON COUNTY -- U.S. Highway 82 remains closed in both directions between Sherman and Bells as crews work this week to repair a sinkhole. The pavement began sinking above a gas line that runs underneath the road, TexDOT officials said.

Crews are having to drill approximately 16 feet underground to locate the line that's causing the problem.

"We put some warning signs up yesterday and came back this morning to patch it out a little depression in the highway. As we started patching our way out, it started sinking on us," TexDOT engineer Kevin Harris said.

Traffic between Sherman and Bells is being rerouted onto State Highway 56 until at least Wednesday.

***UPDATE*** Section of US 82 closed and traffic detoured

Grayson County, TX – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has closed a section of US 82 just east of Choctaw Creek. The east and westbound lanes will be detoured to repair a sinkhole caused by a natural gas pipeline. Traffic will detour at FM 1417 in Sherman, south to SH 56, then east to Bells and back onto US 82. TxDOT officials will meet with representatives of the pipeline company to discuss the estimated period for repair. Kevin Harris, Sherman Area Engineer for TxDOT, expects this section of US 82 to remain closed for the rest of the week.
