Restaurant Owner Sought for Burglaries

11-17-06 -Carter and Love County authorities think they've cracked a year-old burglary case. All fingers point to Mannsville restaurant owner Velin Barnes.

Authorities raided the home of Barnes Thursday night. He owns Bill's Cafe in Mannsville. They discovered evidence linked to the crime. But Barnes was no where to be found.

It all started a year ago when thousands of dollars worth of farm equipment disappeared from a home on Oswalt Road in Love County.

A recent tip led police to Johnston County where they recovered a stolen John Deere tractor. From there, evidence led authorities to Barnes’ rural Carter County home where they found drugs, a pistol, and a stolen welder.

Now Barnes is facing drug, weapons and burglary charges, a fact that surprises folks in Mannsville, especially his customers.

Barnes remains at large tonight, but there is a warrant out for his arrest.
