Local soldiers are inspiring students to reach out to those less fortunate. When KXII photographer Todd Larkin was home from Afghanistan a few weeks ago, his stories motivated students to help kids in Afghanistan.

Todd told the students how much afghan kids loved to read and write, but they didn't have the supplies to do that. In fact, they're always asking troops to lend them pencils and paper.

11-28-06 - Local soldiers are inspiring students to reach out to those less fortunate. When KXII photographer Todd Larkin was home from Afghanistan, his stories motivated students to help kids in Afghanistan.

Last week, 6th, 7th and 8th graders teamed up to launch a school supply drive. So far, they've pack up five boxes with paper, markers and crayons. On Friday, they'll load them up and ship them to Afghanistan in hopes the children there will enjoy the same luxuries we take for granted.

The kids aren't mailing the supplies until Friday, so if you want to donate there's still time. Just drop donations at the middle school on McArthur Street.

And in Durant, several groups came together to donate $5,000 in phone cards to members of the 1-180th National Guard serving in Afghanistan. The Durant Chamber of Commerce, VFW post 3916, AT&T, the Choctaw Nation, Durant High School and the Masonic Lodge 45 all contributed to reach the goal.
