SHERMAN, TX -- Construction along Taylor Street in Sherman has been constant over the last several months. Almost the entire street has a brand new asphalt surface. But the work that's still left to be done could bring the biggest improvement.

For such a heavily traveled road, Taylor Street is pretty rough on the cars that use it.

The problem- street-wide dips- called Valley Gutters, slow traffic to a crawl as drivers creep through the intersection.

"It makes it almost impossible to get across sometimes during rush hour," said Sam Harrison, who drives on Taylor Street.

Traffic on Taylor has slowly risen over the years, and all the while drivers have put up with the dips.

"I've learned, after the first time, to really slow down. You have to, or you might damage the underside of your car," said Jimmy Green, who lives on Taylor St. near the Crockett St. intersection.

"People like me that run modified cars with lowering kits and everything, that's really bad for us. We have to take the long way around if we just want to get to the park," said Harrison.

But the city has a plan to fix the problem.

"It's essentially repairing the intersections at Crockett St. and Alexander St. It's an old street design where we use Valley Gutters to storm water through those intersections. We're going to eliminate the Valley Gutters and have a smooth transition through both of those intersections. This means that cars will be able to travel through there at the posted speed of 30 m.p.h. and not hit those severe dips," said Jeff Miller, Sherman's Director of Public Works.

$100,000 are earmarked to fix each intersection, paving the way for a smoother, and according to some, a safer drive across town.

"If they're going to repair the bumps, then yeah, that's all fine and dandy. That will be a lot better for everybody. The traffic right now is going slow. Everyone will speed up, and there will be less chance of a collision here, and people will do a lot better around here," said Harrison.

Miller also says that the city will award the contract bid for this project at Monday night's City Council meeting. That means that work should begin by the end of the month, and should be complete before school starts in late August.
