12-11-06 A controversial piece of land in Durant is the source of a debate. The piece of land off Highway 75 is up for rezoning. The question is whether or not it should be zoned for commercial or residential use. Depreciation of the value of homes and increased traffic are some of the concerns of locals. For others proper draining from the property is the main concern among residents that live in close proximity to the proposed commercial retail site which is believed to be a new movie theater. If the rezoning does go through, city officials say they will make sure the residents in the area are protected. They will do so by rezoning them into a residential area instead of the agricultural area where they are currently located.
