We've heard about emergency management plan for catastrophic events like deadly tornadoes, but today Grayson County leaders and community members spent all day planning for something they've never planned for before.
Columbine and Virginia Tech those names are synonymous with the shootings that happened on their campuses. Although separated by years and hundreds of miles, the incidents both left several innocent young people dead and left schools and universities across the country, and right here in Texoma, wondering how to prevent tragedies like this from happening at home.
"Judge Bynum has wanted everyone to think about this in the unlikely event that something like this happened. You are a lot better off if you thought it through ahead of time, than oh my god what do I do now?" said Philip Allum with the National Emergency Training Center
"Moms and dads want to know at the county level, what are you doing to protect my children. This is a great first step; we are very excited about it," said Judge Drue Bynum with Grayson County.
Grayson County Emergency Management says that interagency communication is the key to their preparedness plan, and both law enforcement and county officials say they hope this proactive approach will allow parents and students to feel safer at school.
