12-13-06 If you haven't mailed holiday cards or presents yet, and want them to get to their destination by December 25, you're running out of time.
Wednesday was the last day to mail packages by parcel post and have them delivered by December 25. But for a little more money postal officials say you can still mail letters and packages first class.
The deadline to mail first class is Monday, December 18.
Other shipping options, like priority and express mail are available too.
Depending where you are sending gifts, you can ship items as late as Christmas Eve.
Howe Postmaster Leandra Beckmeyer said, "Between Thanksgiving and Christmas we're going to cancel over 20 billion letters, cards, and packages so that's quite a bit and on the 18th we'll be doing more than 3 times what we do on a normal day so it's going to be a pretty busy day."
Beckmeyer says postal employees are working extra hours to help cut down on the long lines and keep up with the increased shipping demand.
The Sherman Post Office has extended its hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. But postal officials encourage you to mail now, because as it gets closer to the holiday, they say the lines will only get longer.
