ARDMORE, OK -- One family is speaking out, calling for changes made to the way police use force on animals after they say, their family pet lost its eye to a police taser.
Knockout is a pure bred albino boxer. Jami Miller calls him a part of her family and a constant at the TFP Gym she owns and operates with her husband, Jeff Miller.
"He licks people’s faces while they do ab work and unless he has occasional gas, everybody just enjoys him being around,” Jami said. “He's never ever met a person that he didn't like."
But last Sunday Knockout took a major blow, dealt by Ardmore police. Miller said a police officer tased Knockout after he and another family dog escaped from the back yard on Father’s Day.
"They weren't hurting anybody when they pulled up, they were calm and they were collected animals,” Jami explained. “Then they were provoked. That is what caused them to react, as it would anybody - a human being - but especially a dog that doesn't understand what's going on."
Ardmore Police said a neighbor called animal control saying she was concerned the two loose dogs could pose a danger to area residents. When animal control officers arrived, they said they were able to walk right up to both dogs.
"Animal control officers are trained to pick up an animal in the friendliest way possible, therefore they offer the dog biscuit, try to pick up the animal and place it in the vehicle,” Deputy Police Chief Richard Ackerman explained.
Ardmore Police said that's when Knockout snapped at the animal control officer, so a police officer fired a taser at the dog. Police say they never meant to hit Knockout in the eye.
"It's an unfortunate accident, but in the course of things the animal control officer and the police officer did the right thing, and the correct thing to control the dogs and keep them from jeopardizing the safety of people in the neighborhood,” Ackerman said.
Miller agreed there is a need for tasers in some situations, but she said Knockout getting lose was not one. Miller told First News she wants stricter regulations on when tasers can be used on animals, so another family doesn't have to go through this pain.
"The bottom line is that it's really just about stricter guidelines to prevent this for somebody else. There's nothing we can do to get Knockout's eye back, it's gone."
Miller said she was also slapped with a ticket for "harboring vicious animals.” Her court date is set for July, but she said she will continue to fight for better protocol when it comes to the use of tasers on animals.
