FEMA assistance available for wildfire victims
RATLIFF CITY, OK – In its first day of operation on Monday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said they registered more than 25 people for federal aid at their Disaster Recovery Center in Ratliff City. RATLIFF CITY, OK – In its first day of operation on Monday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said they registered more than 25 people for federal aid at their Disaster Recovery Center in Ratliff City. FEMA describes the center as a one-stop-shop for the fire victims who lost their homes, or had their property damaged because of massive April wild fires. But not everyone we talked to said they’re getting the help they need.
Joe Williams spent Monday afternoon on the phone registering with FEMA at the Disaster Recovery Center in Ratliff City.
"I'm looking for help; I need help,” said Williams.
The long-time Carter County farmer told First News he needs assistance to replace all his hay that was destroyed in the April wild fires.
"When you figure up 200 bales at $40 a bale - you can figure the cost. It cost more than $3,000 to put it in,” Williams explained.
Williams said he's fortunate the flames didn't damage his home, but his livelihood - his hay crop - was burned to the ground.
And now Williams said he’s getting more bad news – he doesn’t qualify for FEMA aid.
"I'm not qualified,” Williams exclaimed.
When asked why not, Williams said it’s because he’s a farmer.
“There’s nothing here for me as a farmer. This - FEMA and the relief that is here is for homeowners."
FEMA admits there is little help they can provide to farmers. They agency said the center is designed as a one-stop-shop primarily for home owners, and that FEMA focuses more on short term recovery for victims who do don't have house insurance.
"If it's uninsured needs that aren't met – there’s some help for rentals, there’s some housing help,” Jennifer Warren, a Public Information Officer for FEMA, explained.
Warren said the loans the Small Business Administration offer are another options for victims. Homeowners may borrow up to $200,000, and business may borrow up to $2 million dollars in low interest loans from the SBA.
"It's just a place where there’s face-to-face contact, someone can walk you through the process because it can be intimidating,” Warren said.
FEMA suggests that farmers like Williams get help through the United States Department of Agriculture. Williams told First News that's where he'll look to next.
"I'll keep going. I can't stop here. I can't let a fire shut me down,” Williams said.
If you’d like help registering with FEMA, the DRC in Ratliff City is at the First Baptist Church, at 234 Church Street. This week the center will be open from 8AM – 7PM, Monday through Thursday. The center will have shortened hours on Friday - 8AM – 4PM. The DRC will be closed over the weekend for Fourth of July. The center will reopen on Monday, July 6. Its hours will then be 8AM – 7PM, Monday – Saturday. FEMA said the DRC will be open as long as it’s needed in the area.
