SHERMAN, TX- Sherman Mayor Bill Magers says he wants to make the city more green. He hopes to do so with planting more trees and opening new parks. Today the city opened Pecan Grove the largest Park in Sherman. Rita Kotey shows us the newest park opening just in time for the holiday weekend.

“We have Fairview Park the splash for our field park, we are opening Center Street Park this summer for our which will have fields," Sherman Mayor Bill Magers said.

But today Sherman Mayor Bill Magers and other members of the community celebrated the grand opening of Sherman's largest park.

Pecan Grove Park is a 130 acre park just off heritage parkway and west of the Pecan Grove Fire Station. It's a $400,000 investment complete with a playground ,walking trails, and a lake.

"What you see happening in Sherman is a park system developing with different parks attracting different folks and addressing different needs. I think the key thing that I am very proud of and that the council is proud of is all of our parks are going to have walking trails so that young and old can enjoy the park," Magers said.

"The walking trails the jogging trails the fishing, hiking, it's a great amenity," Dean Gilbert said.

Dean Gilbert was the Mayor of Sherman in the late 80's. He was influential in the building of the flood controlled lake inside the park.

"Everybody down post oak creek and the tributaries that empty into it have a better quality of life because of the lake and now that we get the second use as Sherman's largest park, it's a real asset for the city of Sherman," Gilbert.

Construction in the park is not finished yet. Phase two of the project includes the construction of an amphitheater.

In all phase two will cost around $2.4 million. Bids should go out in the next few weeks.
