SHERMAN, TX -- The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and although it's a time to get those fireworks out, you might want to make sure you are safe and not in violation while doing it. Rashi Vats explains in our Safe Family report.
They light up the sky, and while it's a pretty sight, fireworks can be extremely dangerous.
"We’ve had situations where the sparks have ignited clothing and had very serious injuries," says Chief Jeff Jones of the Sherman Fire Department.
In order to prevent those injuries and fires from sparking, the City of Sherman has an ordinance in place, banning residents from having, transporting, or using fireworks within the city limits.
"We’ve seen a lot of compliance in recent years. We've had some complaints about fireworks used or inside the city limits. A lot of calls we get are injuries because of fireworks."
Sherman Fire chief Jeff Jones suggests some alternatives for this holiday weekend.
"There are plenty of professional fireworks shows around. We really encourage rather than risk with fire and injury. Fireworks are expensive. We encourage the community to participate in the organized shows."
But if you decide to do it yourself, Jones says make sure you take precautions.
"If you're out in the county you should be in adult supervision. Make sure you have a water supply close at hand in case the fireworks do result in a fire," Jones says.
"Although we've had a little bit of rain last couple of days, [there is] lots of dry grass out there. The humidity is supposed to drop over the weekend, so this is a high fire danger weekend for us."
Jones says the safest thing to do is to participate in an organized fireworks shows put on by professionals, a list of which can be viewed at the link below.
