H.G. Dulaney, director emeritus of the Sam Rayburn library died Saturday. He was 91 years old. The Ector, Texas native was best known for his close association with the late Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Dulaney served as the Sam Rayburn Library's first director from its opening in 1957 until his retirement from full-time work in 2002. The retirement was all but ceremonial, since he continued to serve the library several days a week until his death.

Dulaney was a veteran of World War II and was stationed in Burma among other places. He worked for a title company in Bonham until 1951, when Speaker Rayburn hired him as a legislative assistant in his Washington D.C. office.

When Rayburn asked Dulaney to lead the then-future library to be built in Bonham, Dulaney remembered telling his boss that he knew nothing about how libraries operated.

"Well, take some courses," Dulaney remembered Rayburn telling him.

Dulaney once said his initials weren't abbreviations for any particular name, but did say his father had the same initials.

"My father's name was Horace Greeley Dulaney," Dulaney told KXII-TV in 2006.

Dulaney's father died when H.G. was a boy, and the lack of a father figure was what Mr. Dulaney said helped form the bond with Rayburn.

In addition to being known as the keeper of Rayburn's legacy, Dulaney was also known as being active in his community, and for having a wonderful sense of humor.

Funeral services are set for Tuesday morning at 10 at the Ector First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Carson Cemetery. Following services, a time of remembrance will be held at the Sam Rayburn Library in Bonham.
