An Ardmore man drowned yesterday on Lake Murray while enjoying July Fourth with his family. Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the accident was related to the man's health.
Shawn Randall Thogmartin was visiting the T-P beach near the marina with his children and ex-wife when he collapsed into the water at about 5:15 pm. Thogmartin was underwater for about 3 to 5 minutes when three individuals noticed him underwater and took him upon shore where CPR was administered .
"Thogmartin had entered with the lake with his children when he went underwater just off shore," said Marty Grisham, investigating trooper for Oklahoma Highway Patrol. "We believe he collapsed before going under water and nobody saw him."
Ambulance crews continued resuscitation until arriving at the hospital where Thogmartin was pronounced dead at 6:22 pm. Family members say Thogmartin was diabetic and had been complaining of low blood sugar all day.
"Wear a life vest if you don't feel well and that way you can be rescued," said Grisham. "Be smart, think about safety, and be sure to have on the proper life support so that if you do get in trouble other people will see you and can help."
Thogmartin was found only feet from the beach in water roughly 4 feet high. OHP warns that any person who does not feel well should wear life vests should you go swimming.
A fund has been set up at the Citizens Bank & Trust in Ardmore to help the family with funeral costs.
