Identity Theft on the Rise Locally

1-9-07 Law enforcement says the crime of identity theft is on the rise. The Grayson County sheriff's office says a local man recently became a victim of identity theft. Officials say he received an email asking for personal information from someone claiming to work for a bank. Deputies say these email scams have become a popular way for thieves to steal personal information and they are seeing about 2 to 3 calls about identity theft each week. Lieutenant Hawley says banks do not ask for personal information over the phone or internet. If a call or email asking for personal information is received, your local bank, credit card company and law enforcement should be notified.
