Update on Sherman fire">
1-10-07 A large fire at a Sherman apartment complex tied up emergency crews Wednesday night. The fire destroyed dozens of apartments and displaced at least eight families. Even with the fire, the work of one neighborhood hero had many counting their blessings.
It started just before 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilltop Village apartment complex on Texoma Parkway just across from Midway Mall.
Xerius Jackson always finds himself in the middle of certain situations. Wednesday night he found himself in the thick of a massive apartment fire.
"She needed help so I did what I could do," said Jackson, a 14-year-old resident of the complex. "I was just messing around, seeing what it was."
When Sherman Fire Chief Jeff Jones arrived, two residents were already being treated for burns. The area was also roped off for safety from people looking on.
"Obviously, a lot of families are around here," Jones said. "Trucks are still arriving."
One person people are thanking is Jackson, who shunned the gratitude.
"I always knew he had it in him," said Rachel Howard, a complex resident. "He's gonna go on to something great."
One person was treated on the scene, and another had to be taken by helicopter to the hospital. No word yet on a cause of the fire.
Red Cross volunteers were out helping those affected by the fire find a place to sleep tonight.
