Ada Man Freed After Wrongful Conviction

12-3-03 - An Ada man is breathing free air tonight after being locked up for 20 years for a crime he didn’t commit. DNA testing of old evidence led to the release of Calvin Lee Scott today from a Lawton prison. Scott was originally convicted in the1982 rape of an Ada woman. A tip led police to Scott, and prosecutors used hair analysis to convict him. DNA testing wasn’t available back then. Scott actually finished serving his 25 year sentence last year but was still in prison for assaulting a corrections officer. He’s the third person convicted in Pontotoc County to have a conviction overturned because of DNA testing. As for finding the real rapist; prosecutors say that won’t happen because the statute of limitations expired 14 years ago.
