12-04-03 - Convicted killer Ivan Murphy was executed Thursday night in Huntsville for the 1989 fatal beating of 80 year old Lula Mae Denning. Strawberry ice cream in a plastic bowl helped convict Murphy of killing Denning at her home during a robbery attempt. Investigators found Murphy's fingerprint in the bowl. In a brief final statement, Murphy said: "This is a celebration of life, not death. Through Jesus Christ we have victory over death." He thanked Pope John Paul the Second and others for prayers, love and support, saying, quote: "I want to thank everybody around the world and Father, let your will be done." Murphy was the 24th convicted killer in Texas to have his
punishment carried out this year.
