12-11-03 Authorities have identified the man suspected of committing a 1982 rape that another man spent 20 years in prison for before DNA evidence cleared him.

Pontotoc County District Attorney Bill Peterson says the DNA links Steven Wayne Sauls to the crime that Calvin Scott was wrongly convicted of committing. Sauls is currently serving 60 years in prison for a 1991 conviction in Oklahoma County for rape and lewd acts with a child.

Peterson says the statute of limitation will likely prevent prosecution of Sauls for the 1982 rape. But he says he'll ask the Oklahoma County District Attorney to fight any parole attempt.

Scott was released from prison Dec. 3 after the DNA evidence cleared him of the crime.
