Forty-four cents for a hamburger? If you were in Bonham on Wednesday, you could have had a couple for less than a buck. Local farmers hosted a cookout at the downtown square not just to celebrate but to present their views on the abundance and affordability of food in America.

The burgers cost 44 cents to show that farmers and ranchers only get 22 cents out of every dollar you spend at the grocery store.

David Hembree of the Fannin County Farm Bureau said if you showed up late, you probably left hungry.

"This is the fourth year, we started with 300 hamburgers, then 500... This year we started early. We sold out in an hour and twenty minutes."

Farm Bureau officials say it takes farmers five weeks to earn enough income for an entire year's worth of food for a family.
