HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) - An autopsy is under way in Florida on
former Playboy playmate Anna Nicole Smith. The 39-year-old died
yesterday at a hotel in Hollywood, Florida.
Police are reviewing the hotel's surveillance tapes to see if they might provide a clue to what happened. A police official says officers have interviewed everyone connected to the death, and that nobody is under suspicion. He says, "Nothing about this death seems suspicious."
Smith's mother blames drugs. Vergie Arthur tells ABC's "Good Morning America" from Houston that she suspected her daughter was
using drugs, and that her late grandson, Danny, was using them as well. The 20-year-old died last September in the Bahamas, shortly after his mother gave birth to a baby girl.
But Smith's attorney says she had been ill with a fever for several days, and that she was still depressed over her son's death.
A hearing is scheduled in California today over the custody of Smith's baby. Her companion Howard K. Stern is listed as her father on the birth certificate, but it's challenged by Smith's ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead.
People magazine is reporting on its Web site that the baby is being cared for in the Bahamas by the mother of an immigration minister described as a close friend of Smith.
