University Employee Accused of Organized Crime

1-22-04 - A longtime University of North Texas employee is accused in a scheme that police say involves theft of more than a quarter of a million dollars.

UNT announced Thursday that 47-year-old Patti Dale was fired after the fraud investigation began in September. She worked for UNT for more than 20 years and most recently was assistant to the dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences.

Police allege the case involves overpaying student employees, paying people for work they didn't do and kickbacks.

Police arrested 12 of 14 suspects; including Dale's 20-year-old son, Matthew Dale of Houston. Patti Dale is charged with first degree felony counts of theft of more than $200,000 by a public servant and engaging in organized criminal activity.

All 14 people are charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, plus theft charges.
