Carter County Employee Fired - Admits to Embezzlement

01-29-04 - A secretary for the Carter County Commissioners Office has admitted to using county money to purchase personal items.

It came to the attention of the commissioners Friday when a collection agency called about an outstanding bill. An account with Orscheln Lawn and Garden had been opened with the county by secretary Michelle Ray.

The Sheriffs Office then started an investigation in which they found another account also set up at Lowes in Ardmore. The sheriff says Bray has admitted to embezzling the money - which totals $4,000. Charges have not yet been filed against Ray, but she was fired from her position with the county.

The Carter County District Attorneys office will announce tomorrow if charges will be filed.
