Jackson Admits to Stunt Gone Wrong

Super Bowl XXXVIII Mishap

2-2-04 - (New York-AP) -- Janet Jackson says her breast-baring during the Super Bowl halftime show was "a last-minute stunt" that she
hadn't intended "to go as far as it did." Jackson issued an apology "to anyone offended -- including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL." She says the decision to have a "costume reveal" was made after final rehearsals and without MTV's knowledge. A Jackson spokeswoman says the singer's breasts were supposed to remain covered by a red lace garment when Justin Timberlake ripped off her top. What viewers saw instead was Jackson's right breast, covered only by a sun-shaped nipple decoration. Many have already decided it was a publicity stunt, despite Timberlake's comment that it was "a wardrobe malfunction." But the display coincided exactly with Timberlake singing the lyric, "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song."
