2-27-04 - There is good news concerning the presence of Golden Algae in Lake Texoma. Fish and Game experts in both states believe that the threat is mostly over this season.

The presence of the algae was discovered in January in the area of Lebanon pool, on the Oklahoma side of the lake. It's deadly to fish because it takes oxygen from the water. Dozens of fish died in the area. It was the first time Golden Algae had shown up in an Oklahoma lake.

But since then, even though the algae is still present in the lake, no fish have died. It’s likely connected to warming water temperatures, which kill off the algae. Now all it would take is a good rain to eliminate the problem, at least until next year. Officials say that the algae has not spread to any new areas of the lake.
