3-3-04 - Students and faculty at Denison High School are dealing with their third student death in 4 months today. Joseph Seward, a 15-year-old freshman, was killed Tuesday night when the car he was riding in hit a tree west of Pottsboro.
The single-car accident happened around 5:45 p.m., along Kyker Street. DPS Troopers say Jake Lewis and Joseph were in a car that lost control after swerving over a hill. The driver, 17-year-old Lewis, over-corrected and slammed into a tree. He was able to get out of the car on his own power and was taken to Texoma Medical Center. Seward died on impact.
Counselors have been on hand at Denison High today as as students are struggling with difficult questions of why his life was taken so soon. Teachers and students say he was well liked and got along with everyone.
An official on the scene says the two were in a hurry to get to a friends house when the accident occurred. Alcohol and drugs were not factors.
Lewis is still hospitalized, but should recover from his injuries. The family of Seward has set up a fund for his funeral. Donations are being taken at the Denison High School office.
Late last year, a female Denison student died from the flu, and last month, another teenage student drowned in a car accident near Lake Texoma.
