MADILL, OK -- Have you done a good deed lately? One local doctor in Marshall County is working to recognize kids who have, and he's encouraging others to do so with a "Good Deed Contest." Shelby Levins reports.
The local good deed contest is part of a national competition called "Do a Good Deed." The national movement started out in California. And while the competition may be new to our area, the idea of encouraging young people to help others and do the right thing, is nothing new to Texoma.
Dr. James Talley is a practicing chiropractor. Growing up in Marshall County, Dr. Talley says it was the community support that allowed him to achieve his goals, and now he's looking to foster more support for the future.
"I believe, had it not been for that community support, I don't think I would have gone to college, and more especially earned a doctorate degree,” Dr. Talley explained.
Now Dr. Talley is looking to give back, sponsoring a "Good Deed Contest" for area kids, up to 18-years old. Encouraging them to help others and improve their community, Dr. Talley is even giving away a new computer to the winner.
"There's no strings attached to this, I'm saying, 'hey thank you for helping me as a child and I'm wanting to help your child in return,'” Dr. Talley said.
Dr. Talley says many good deeds go unrecognized each day. He wants to take the time to recognize kids who have done good deeds, and promote more positive acts.
"Anyone can do a good deed, rather it's helping someone tie their shoes or collecting can goods for a food drive,” Dr. Talley said.
J.D. Flowers did just that. He collected more than 350 canned goods for the food panty at the United Methodist Church in Kingston. The 12-year-old even spent his own allowance to buy food for others in need.
"I got food from friends, and my guardians, and I bought food,” J.D. said.
J.D. is one of 72 kids that wrote a short essay explaining their good deed to enter the contest.
Dr. Talley says he's just thankful so many young people are doing so many good things
"I have read quite a few of them and they have been really good. The judges are going to have a hard time, I'll tell you that,” Dr. Talley said.
The contest deadline has been extended until next October 9, 2009. The winner will be selected by the national judges out in California. And the grand prize will be handed out by Dr. Talley's office at the end of October.
