2-15-04 - Family and friends of Katherine Ewig are remembering her as positive and upbeat, just one day after the Denison sophomore drowned in Lake Texoma. It happened on Valentines Day when the car she was riding in plunged into the icy waters.
Today First News spoke with Katherine's father. Mark Ewig described the 16 year old as unselfish and says, "I'll remember her smile. She was always positive and upbeat - not one to get down."
Katherine was with her boyfriend and another friend at the time of her death. They were coming back from helping a friend change a tire near Lake Texoma. But her boyfriend hit an icy patch on Lake Russell Road and slid off the dam and down an embankment. The car flipped at the water's edge, and only two of the occupants escaped. Firefighters were finally able to remove Katherine from the water, but CPR did not revive her.
Katherine is described by her father as athletic and energetic. He also says her death will be hard for her classmates but that she would want them to move on. "If nothing else comes out of this, I know in her
heart she would want her student friends to pick up the pieces," said Mark. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 2 pm at the Park Avenue Church of Christ in Denison.
