Money Put on Hold For Local Charities

2-16-04 - A way for local counties to help victims of violence is in trouble, thanks to a constitutional question in Texas. It surround a $15 fee on every divorce that Grayson County instituted last fall. The money went directly to non-profit agencies that protect victims of violence. But other Texas counties aren’t so sure about it. Harris county in southeast Texas was the first to question the constitutionality of the Family Protection fee. For now, Grayson county commissioners will continue collecting it. But until the Texas Attorney General rules on the fee, they won't distribute the money to five local agencies. Commissioners hope to have a ruling by April, which would be the next time for distribution. Five area agencies benefit from the fee, including the Child Guidance Clinic, Casa, the Crisis Center, the Child Advocacy Center, and Juvenile Alternatives.
