Sherman Icon Facing Demolition

3-11-04 - Sherden Mall has stood on Texoma Parkway since the 1960’s, but within six months it will only be a memory.

Demolition crews have begun fencing off the 44 acres and preparing to remove asbestos from the building. The buildings owners have resisted improving the property for over a decade, and during that time all stores and businesses moved out.

City officials have pushed for the demolition because the property could be developed into a prime piece of real estate again. But it won’t happen soon, the crews will have to take care in demolishing the building, due to the asbestos. It will likely take six months or longer.

City officials say it will probably be divided up and leased to several new retailers.
