Love County -- Recently Marshall County residents voted to update their 911 call system. Now Love County leaders are proposing a similar overhaul for its outdated 911 system with an upcoming election.
Right now, if you call 911 in Love county, the emergency call comes in through a red rotary phone. It shows the dispatcher only a phone number, no physical address. Many emergency responders say that's simply not enough.
"Most of the address that are given to us, the directions are go so many miles, turn to a direction, go to a house there's a certain color vehicle,” Teresa Tow, a Medic with Love County, explained.
Tow attended Monday night's E-911 meeting and says the election held on December 8th to fund the new enhanced-911 system is vital to improving emergency response.
"It could definitely make a difference here. There could be lives saved, without it there could be lived lost,” Tow said.
The E-911 system would provide dispatchers with an exact physical address, which Tow says would speed up response time.
"If the E-911 system is set up and set up right, it would be a great deal for the citizens of Love County,” Sheriff Joe Russell stated.
However, Sheriff Russell says he has some concerns, like where the new dispatch center would be housed. But E-911 board members say details like that haven't been decided yet.
Love County Emergency Management Director Tracey Smithwick says meetings, like the one held on Monday night, are aimed at spreading public awareness about the upcoming election.
"We need to educate the people and say; do you really want your emergency responders being 30 minutes late, or 30 minutes earlier?" Smithwick said.
But a new E-911 system doesn't come cheap. It will be up to voters to decide if they want to approve a 15% monthly service fee on the base rate of landlines - which works out to be about $2.50 for residential lines – along with a $0.50 monthly service fee for cell phones to fund the system.
But Love County officials say an 911 overhaul is immenent. If voters don't approve this measure, officials say the upgrade will be mandated by the state in 4 years.
"In 2012 the state of Oklahoma is going to come in and say ya'll don't have E911, so ya'll need to join up with some one else (who does,)” Smithwick explained.
Tows says she doesn't want her dispatch center to be regionalized and set up outside of love county, that's why she's encouraging people to vote yes on the issue in December.
The next E-911 board meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 9th. And board members say they'll plan more public forums as the election draws closer.
