2-25-04 - Law officers today rescued 5-year-old Sierra Dawn Sasiain but fatally shot her mother to end an 18-hour standoff at a home in Valley View, Texas.

Officers broke a window out of the mobile home and removed the child, who was placed in a patrol car and driven away. Police say Sierra Dawn Sasiain appears to be OK.

Cooke County Sheriff Mike Compton says 30-year-old Crystal Pinkston opened fire on officers who then returned fire. Pinkston was flown to a Fort Worth hospital and later pronounced dead.

Officers say Pinkston yesterday afternoon entered the Southmont Baptist Church daycare center in Denton and took her daughter at gunpoint. The sheriff says the girl's grandparents are her legal guardians.
