Penny Drive Keeping Bonham Busy

2-26-04 - Students in Bonham are counting their pennies, to help save a friend from Leukemia.

Seventeen-year-old Justin Owen of Randolph was diagnosed almost two years ago and spends most of his time in chemotherapy treatments at a Dallas hospital. His only chance of surviving is a bone marrow transplant. But while he waits for a donor, his classmates and teachers in the Bonham school district are raising money to help find a cure.

It’s part of the “Pennies for Patients" drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. So far they’ve collected some $1,500 in pennies, and raised $1,000 during a radio-thon Thursday.

The Penny drive will end on Monday. If the high school reaches their goal of $2,400, their assistant principal will shave his head. If you’d like to help, call the Bonham High School at 903-583-5567.
