Student Killed in Crash, Remembered

04-03-04- Today, friends, teammates, and total strangers came together to remember a young lady who touched many lives. Katherine Ewig was the 16 year old Denison junior who was killed on Valentine's Day when the car she was riding in plunged into icy water.

Today was the first softball game of the season for the Denison Lady Yellowjackets. Sherman and Denison are traditionally rivals, but they put aside the rivalry today in a moving tribute to Katherine. Players from Paris, Sherman, and Denison lined the softball field holding flowers in Katherine's memory.

The Ewig family stood at home plate, where they were honored with two plaques and $500 dollars collected for the Katherine Ewig scholarship, an athletic scholarship that will be awarded to one student from Denison High School every year.

A memorial sits on the sidelines at Culpepper Field in Denison; a large banner with Katherine's picture and athletic number.
